Ficus benghalensis (Indian Banyan Tree) – Growth into Iconic Specimens

The Ficus benghalensis, or Indian Banyan Tree, is famous for its awe-inspiring specimens in places like Hawaii, where these trees form massive, sprawling canopies supported by numerous aerial roots. While this dramatic transformation is possible, it requires significant time, ideal conditions, and space.  For those of us lacking the time, space and tropical climatge required for these iconic trees, they still make excellentt houseplants.

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Thrives in bright, indirect sunlight but can adapt to medium light. Avoid harsh direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn.
  • Watering: Water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry. Overwatering can cause root rot, so ensure the pot has proper drainage.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix, such as one designed for houseplants.
  • Humidity & Temperature: Prefers moderate humidity and temperatures between 65-85°F (18-29°C). Avoid cold drafts.
  • Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10) diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during spring and summer. Pause fertilization in fall and winter.
  • Pruning: Prune as needed to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth.

With its bold foliage and commanding presence, Ficus benghalensis is an excellent choice for plant lovers looking to make a green, tropical statement indoors.
